AskFreelancers: Working with clients or agencies

Apologies for the lateness of AskFreelancers this week, I have had a lot of work on lately and didn’t find time over the weekend to post this.

As a freelancer you have the option to work with both clients and agencies, but which do freelancers prefer and why? This post will explore mine and other freelancers preferences and explain the reasons for the choice.

So let’s start off with me, as a web designer I work with both clients who seek me out and agencies, working for agencies being my favourite. The reason why I favour agencies is because you build up a relationship, you know what prices to charge, you know what questions to ask and you’re generally just more comfortable. However, this also means that they are comfortable and getting payment on time can sometimes be troublesome. The main advantage is that you get a steady stream of work which is what is needed for freelancers to stay freelancing.

I do still like to work with clients but having some bad experiences with previous clients tends to move you more to work for people that you trust rather than new clients who may be very flaky.

AskFreelancers: Work from home or office?

In a couple of weeks I will be (hopefully) moving into my first proper office and as such for this weeks AskFreelancers, I wanted to ask freelancers where they work from and the advantages and disadvantages of working there. In this post we will see some freelancers responses to this question.

If you want to take part in AskFreelancers on Help Developer then you can, I put a question up every Sunday on the FreelanceSwitch forums so get yourself over and sign up if you want to participate, you get a link to your site/blog/portfolio if your response gets published. If you have a question you would like answered please leave it as a comment below.

So this week, I asked the question; “Where do you work and what are the advantages and disadvantages?”

AskFreelancers: Music you listen to when working

AskFreelancers is where I ask freelancers a question, this time I asked the question, “What styles or artists do you listen to when working on contracts”. Personally I like to listen to music without lyrics when I am coding because it requires concentration and I often find myself distracted as I start to sing along, so I tend to prefer more jazz and chillout music, however when I am designing I tend to listen to more Indie and the older tunes that my parents would listen to.

I asked the question on the FreelanceSwitch forums and it was quite clear that most people preferred more relaxed lyric free music as well when they were working with popular artists including Steve Vai, The Beatles and Bon Jovi. Below are some of the best answers that the freelancers gave, complete with links to the artists last.fm profiles if you fancy a listen.
