Hi, I’d like to start off with some news from Envato, Collis has been in touch and I now have the official launch date of ThemeForest and it is next Tuesday 2nd of September, it has been in private beta for the past three weeks but it has been anything but quiet. Me and the many other designers have been hard at it producing some very nice templates ready for launch and the Envato team have been working hard to get any problems ironed out. So it is nice to finally see it ready to go live.
A couple of hours ago Chris Coyier of CSS Tricks launched Status, which is a sort of like a private twitter for groups and looks to be something that can come in very handy especially if you are working on projects with other people and need to just keep up to date with each other.
If you have ever wondered whether it is better to go for a freelancer/small web design company or a larger web design studio then there is a bit of a debate going on at the moment which you may want to read. Yesterday, Calvin Cox published a post giving 7 Reasons Why It’s Better to Hire a Freelance Designer or Small Design Firm Than a Large Design Company, today somebody posted about the opposite notion that It’s Better to Hire a Large Design Company Than a Freelance Designer or Small Design Firm in response to the previous post, and now there seems to be quite a hot debate going on about the topic.
Apparently, Google is a badly designed site according to this post: Top 10 websites that suck but shouldn’t, although I think I am going to have to disagree with them on this one. I also came across a blog for the first time today and it seems quite popular so that’s strange, it’s called Function and they published a nice post with 33 New Design Blogs with Great Content & Resources, which have 33 new design blogs of which quite a few of them are new to me, I think I need to update my Google Reader a bit.
Finally, I think we’d struggle to find a web designer who likes IE 6, however today bought us to the question, why are we still having to design for it as it reaches its 7th birthday.

Hi,
Thanks for the mention, i think you have misunderstood me on the Google part as many others have, so i decided to highlight the text which says that i only want the users opinion if Google should consider redesigning.
I don’t think its a bad site, its probably the best minimal website i have seen, but that doesn’t stop me from believing that goggle could do better.
thanks

I did quite a lot of research for a presentation at uni on Google and the design of it was one of the main reasons it was so successful. I don’t think I would like Google any other way than it is, it takes no time at all to load and works everytime.

Thanks for link to my post on reasons large companies are better than freelancers. Definitely stirred up some opinions. For the record though, I’d still pick a small company or freelancer almost every time.
