codethatdesign | Your opinions please

June 24, 2008

Some of you may have noticed that I haven’t been posting the past couple of days, this is because I have been working on codethatdesign, which is a psd to xhtml/css service.

I would like to know your opinions on the new design, do you like it? Is it easy to read and navigate? Are there any problems viewing it (things not lining up properly etc.)?

The site was designed in The Gimp and there are a few techniques that I used that I will be creating tutorials on so keep an eye out for them.  The icons are from my favourite icon set in the world, Everaldo’s Crystal Set.

The site can be found at http://codethatdesign.com, so please take a look and let me know what you think.

The site looks real good, its easy to read and to know what offers. But its too slow, all that i see are images

    Hi, thank you.

I didn’t want to use default fonts like Arial or Verdana so I had to use images to deliver the content so it may be slow on some internet speeds. I will look at making the images in other formats because currently they are in the high quality .png format.

Well… I gotta say that Jesus had better luck than I did w/ your website. When I went to check it out, it didn’t even load… I look forward to seeing what you’ve come up w/ though!

Yeah, the hosts are messing around with the DNS or something, I think it is extremely stupid to be messing around updating stuff at this time but what can I expect for $1 a month hosting. Anyways, it should be online on and off over the night, its on as I am writing this so if you’re quick, lol.

btw, I have changed the image setup so that a lot of it is now text so it shouldn’t take as long to load, someone rightly said that they were going to give me some work but when they saw that it was based off of images they changed their mind, but its all okay now.

I like the concept and the business model looks smooth and slick, however when i viewed source i got a little confused.

You state the site itself is an example of valid XHTML code yet you use a html 4 loose doctype? and even then if its trying to validate as that doctype why are you using xhtml closes on some (not all) tags (i.e. the br/)…

Anyways hope you see this as constructive feedback not trying to have a go, as I said I like the business concept and the site looks great visually, just need to make the source amazing now :)

Hi, thank you for your comments Rob, I was without the internet last night so I couldn’t do the validation of the site when I changed it over from image based to html based. It is now completely valid to HTML 4.01 Strict: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcodethatdesign.com%2F&charset=(detect+automatically)&doctype=Inline&ss=1&group=0

I do always take constructive feedback seriously so thank you. The site has also been featured on CSS Mania, yey thats two of my sites on there now. I’ve also redesigned my web templates store so some of you may want to take a look at that as well: http://simnorcomputing.com/templates/

    Thank you

Just two things I immediately noticed,

    - The table on the services page is kind of unclear,
    - At the bottom of the contact page it says “already exists”, [PHP bug?]

    Simon Says:

Thank you for letting me know about that contact form, it was the wrong one so hopefully no one tried to contact me through that form else I’ve just lost out on some deals, arrrggghh, things just aren’t going well with this site, first the domain issues, then the validation, all at the same time when I am getting hundreds of visitors from css mania.
