Resizing Images in The Gimp

April 22, 2008

One of the members of my Gimp forum asked the following question:

I wish to resize 800pixels by 60 pixels. But it won’t let me. Is there a solution?

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to resize your images quickly in The Gimp.

  1. Open your image in The Gimp by selecting Open from the File menu
  2. Find the image and click Open
  3. Now select Scale Image from the Images menu

  4. The following window should come up:

change the Width or the Height value, changing one should change the other so that the aspect ratio is kept the same. You can click the little link icon to force your values if you don’t want to keep aspect ratio. When done simply click Scale and thats it, you image is now resized.

Yes I was very successful finally! I did change my photo to 800 by 60. Yet I see that the photo is naturally too much stretched. Is there way of keeping it beautiful ie the same ratio?

When I do this, the smaller resized image ends up in a corner of the original image (the rest being the transparent “checkered” pattern). I always end up having to select the smaller image, copy it, then paste it as a new image.

Why doesn’t this function just resize the picture AND trim off the rest, without the need for making a new image?
