Creating a web 2.0 logo in The Gimp
February 27, 2008
Creating a web 2.0 logo is relatively simple in The Gimp using the text tool and some handy tips which I will show in this short step by step tutorial on how to create a web 2.0 logo.
- Create a new canvas, I am using a canvas size 420 x 150px
- Select the text tool (T) and click on the canvas. Change the font size value to 40 and the font family to Arial Bold, and then change the text colour to 217077
- Type the text of your logo, I am going to call mine “help developer”

- Change the colours in the colour chooser on the main Gimp window to forecolour: 31bcc8 and back colour: 217077
- Now select the select tool (R) and activate the canvas window.
- Press Ctrl + A, then Ctrl + X and then Ctrl + V, this will cut and paste the text back in but will select the outline of the text so that you can add a gradient.
- Choose the gradient tool (L) and drag from the top of the text to the bottom of the text so it creates a gradient like this:

- Go the layers window and duplicate the top layer by clicking the duplicate button.
- Select the duplicated layer and redo step 6 so that the outline of the text is selected.
- Select the ellipse select tool (E) and create a ellipse near the top of the text so it looks like this:

- Go to the main Gimp window and change the forecolour to FFFFFF and press Ctrl + , which will fill it with a white colour.
- Unselect everything and go back to the layers window. Change the opacity setting to 15.0
- Now select the first text layer again and choose Filters -> Light and Shadow -> Drop Shadow and change the options to these and click OK:

- That’s it. You can change the styles and colours and make it suit your website better, this tutorial was only designed to show you how to create a simple web 2.0 logo and here it is, the final outcome:

The step where you say to press Ctrl and + doesn’t work. It does nothing.

You shouldn’t be pressing the + key, for example Ctrl + X, you should be pressing the Ctrl button and the X button at the same time. Hope this helps

If you mean step
11) Go to the main Gimp window and change the forecolour to FFFFFF and press Ctrl + , which will fill it with a white colour.
then the shortcut is Ctrl and the comma key (Ctrl and ,)
Hope this helps
